thank you, Canada

By SOLO

There is something especially powerful about an immigrant getting to vote. It’s the ultimate “welcome, make yourself at home”.

This is not the right I am entitled to. This is the right I was given. And exercising that right is the least I can do, as a way of saying thanks.

Juggling two countries in your heart is not easy.

Russia is my mother. We have a complicated relationship. She gave birth to me. I love her… but I don’t like her very much. Our characters are very different. We do much better apart.

Canada is my best friend, my roommate. We live together and get along great. With Canada, I feel like I belong. We share most views, and we have mutual respect for each other.

So, thank you, Canada. Not for the choices you made last night (although… yay!), but for including me in your decision-making process.

Once again – you made me feel at home.
