WTM 2013 game changer

Posted on May 23, 2013

If you have completed a Tough Mudder in the past little while, chances are you have received the following email: “Mudders, If 10-12 miles of Tough Mudder grit is somehow not enough for you, you’re going to want to read this email closely. World’s Toughest Mudder 2013 – a grueling 24-hour challenge designed to find

Tim, thank you for weighing in. Although I think you may have misunderstood. I am very much the part of the "us" you are referring to. However, the point stands, and while last year the 1,200 who were at the start of WTM were some of the fastest Mudders, this year it WILL boil down to whoever will register first (and yes, that includes a credit card). Some of those individuals (such as yourself) are incredible athletes who have worked very hard to be there. However, I don't think they will necessarily be the majority. Now, that's actually good news in some ways for those hardworking athletes, as the competition may be less stiff. :) Oh, and kudos for making it all the way from Australia!!!!!!

Ultra Beast post-mortem – part 2

Posted on May 15, 2013

“There are times when you reminisce about the things you’ve gone through before, and surely you’ll smile and say How the hell did I get through all that?” [Author unknown] September 22, 2012. Saturday. We are at the start about an hour early. Hustle and bustle, as Ultra Beasters were setting up their drop bins,

the Ultra Beast 2012 playlist

Posted on October 5, 2012

Here’s the official playlist the team Trifecta put together for our road trip to Vermont. This is my interpretation of what would happen if this race had a soundtrack. 1) Gangam Style by Psy The official theme song of the weekend and the Ultra Beast. It was nominated by my students, when I asked them

Ultra Beast post-mortem – part 1

Posted on October 4, 2012

According to Wikipedia, the goddess of knowledge, post-mortem examination is “an examination of a corpse in order to determine cause of death”. How fitting… [flashbacks to my legs, suggesting their owner suffered an aggravated assault… with a baseball bat] Of course, it also refers to post-mortem as “a process, usually performed at the conclusion of

Ultra Beast post-partum

Posted on September 30, 2012

It has been just over a week since the Ultra Beast, and I have thought about this race every single day. For most of the week, I have been dragging my feet, skipping my workouts and eating cookies. This time last week, I was packing my drop bin, I said on Wednesday. This time last

recovery week after Spartan Ultra Beast

Posted on September 25, 2012

I’m still assessing damage after the Saturday’s race, but it does not look too bad. No injuries that I can feel yet. Definitely sore all over. Lots of bruises. Lots of scrapes. Aloe vera, here I come. Here’s the plan for this week… SATURDAY Race day. 11 hours and 32 minutes of miserable fun. SUNDAY

lessons learned at the Spartan Ultra Beast

Posted on September 24, 2012

It is Monday after the race weekend, and I am fighting my standard post-race blues. After packing and repacking, pacing and obsessing, shopping and prepping, and then packing some more, it almost feels weird not to have all my thoughts occupied with the Ultra Beast. I completed the race in 11 hours and 32 minutes,

CONGRATS! I am in awe.

Posted on September 19, 2012

The bib numbers have been released. Yours truly will be racing as bib 70164. There is something validating about seeing the words FEMALE Ultra Beast next to your name… 🙂 We are expecting over 4,000 obstacle racers. The athletes doing the Beast are facing some stiff competition, as I counted over 400 names in the

taper week before Spartan Ultra Beast

Posted on September 17, 2012

The Ultra Beast is 5 sleeps away… My last “long run”, also known as running two races in one day, was about 32km, and took place last weekend. SUNDAY light trail run, 5-7km – testing out the shoes. I purposefully soaked them in an ankle deep puddle, so I can test them running wet. They
